What is hypnosis and how does it work?

Hypnosis is simply being in a very relaxed yet altered state of consciousness much like meditation or daydreaming.  To understand how hypnosis works it is important to understand the different parts of the mind; the conscious mind and the unconscious mind. (some refer to this as the subconscious) The conscious mind is the analytical, thinking part of you and the unconscious is the part of the mind that runs the body, stores information, holds all memories and your belief system.

Hypnosis works by  relaxing or occupying your conscious mind as to better access the unconscious mind for your growth and development. Hypnosis is a gentle way of disarming negative behaviors and replacing them with a newly positive reinforced belief or habit.  Just as you would remove weeds from a garden .. in order to grow you have to weed out old patterns and beliefs from your unconscious mind. Under hypnosis you are fully aware, awake yet relaxed and able to communicate easily.

Hypnosis is used in a variety of ways such as: weight loss, smoking cessation, age/past life regression work, nail biting, stress management and creating a sense of calm and peace - to name a few. If you are looking to create a sense of peace in your life then hypnosis may be for you!




What is a typical one-on-one hypnosis session like? What can I expect?

  • With all new clients, the first session will last around an hour. We will use this time to get to know each other and for me to answer any questions that you may have about hypnosis.
  • During the first session,  I conduct a detailed intake assessment about your current state and where you would like to make changes.
  • When you are ready for hypnosis, I suggest different ways for to relax; mentally and physically - this allows for the conscious mind to quite the chatter to access your internal programming.
  • While you are relaxed, I begin by using positive suggestion and a personalized script prepared specifically as agreed upon in the initial interview.

I recommend that you schedule your hypnosis appointment when you have plenty of time to relax and enjoy your session. It is also a good idea to have a light snack before coming to your session so that a growling stomach will not disrupt your relaxation. As your ability to focus is essential, hypnosis sessions are usually not scheduled before 9 am or after 7 pm, as sleepiness or fatigue may hinder your results.

For the hypnotic state, you can kick back and relax in the overstuffed recliner. I recommend that you empty your bladder before the hypnosis session begins. After you are guided through the hypnotic stage you will be asked to bring your attention and awareness back to the here and now. Remember, you are fully awake and aware during the process but you will probably have engaged in visualization that takes your focus off of "now".

After the session many clients report feeling "refreshed" as if they've had a power nap or meditation. You will have no problem functioning after a session, i.e. driving, working, etc. In the following days, you may start to notice shifts in your behavior, perspective and patterns. Please be sure to notice any resistance to change after your hypnosis sessions, if any.
